Abortion

On the Streets for Life

Early one sprng mornig a few weeks ago, in downtown Toronto, Tom Brown was handing out pro-life pamphlets on the streets in front of  Buruiana’s abortuary. He was waiting for his partner , Mary Burnie. Nearby, he noticed a man and a woman approach the abortuary but then hesitate. Politely, he asked if he could speak to them before they went inside. Can Rescue be rescued?

Two dozen Canadian pro-lifers took part in the Spring of Life rescue campaign in Buffalo, willingly facing violence and abuse from pro-abortion forces and the fear of indignities and incarceration of which we can justifiably be proud. But if I may speak frankly to you, all my fellow Canadian pro-lifers- why is it that we do not have rescue campaigns in Canadian [...]

Eight prisoners

On May 19, eight pro-life prisoners of conscience entered the Allantown prison system to serve what may turn out to be a one-year sentence. At the sentencing hearing after their trial for a rescue in Allentown, Pa., in July 1991, Judge James Knoll Gardner offered to have them serve only one month providing they pay a fine and accept probation. They all [...]

Police State America?

Four people are in prison in a remote area. They have never been charged with a crime; they have never received even the pretence of a trial. On the arbitrary command of an appointed government official, they were simply rounded up and ordered held indefinitely. The reason- they refused to obey his demand that they do something intrinsically evil, that they act [...]

News from Ireland

Pro-lifers in Ireland are still wondering how the bottom fell out of their world. Can they salvage anything out of the mess in which they find themselves as a result of the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Constitution gives a woman a right to an abortion in her life is in danger, and that her threat to commit suicide is proof of [...]

Yellowknife’s Women’s Centre

In 1989, grass roots Canadians were becoming educated on issues as never before. Pro-lifers were grappling with the Supreme Court ruling on abortion, groups like Kids First were lobbying on behalf of families, and REAL Women was exposing the federal government’s lavish funding on feminist groups. In Yellowknife that spring, participants in International Women’s Day decided to form a Women’s Centre ( [...]

59,000 letters oppose hospital take-over bid

Toronto.  Since August 19 Ontario’s health minister has received 59,000 pieces of mail complaining about the threatened elimination of individual Ontario hospital boards. Frances Lankin, Minister of Health, wants to place all hospitals, including those privately owned, under elected boards.  Catholics have swamped the office of the Minister with letters of protest. Layne Verbeek, communications spokesman for the Minister of Health, used [...]

Ru-486, a dangerous drug

The Interim has published several articles on RU-486. Versions of this article have appeared in the Ottawa Citizen and the Vancouver Sun. We print it here because of the issue’s importance. “Dumping chemicals into women’s bodies – specifically into their reproductive systems - has generated billions of dollars in profits for multinational pharmaceutical companies. In the second half of the 20th century [...]

Pharmacist fired Interim Staff

Early in 1992, citing “unreasonable accommodations,” the University of Florida dismissed pharmacist Michael Katsonis for refusing to dispense the “oral” contraceptive Ovral for use as a “morning after” abortifacient. Another unproven charge

In June 1992 a letter was sent out on Canadian Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL) stationary with a handwritten message on the envelope: “In Toronto they bombed a clinic.  I need your help today!”  In the top left-hand corner of the envelope was the writer’s name: June Callwood. The letter, addressed to “Dear Friend,” began as follows: “I have a direct warning [...]

Saving babies

When Joanne Dieleman talks about saving babies from the clutches of abortionists, it’s not idle chitchat. In a remarkable booklet, author Joanne, long time pro-life activist and rescuer, mother of eight children and 249 foster children and grandmother of eight, tells how to save babies from instant death while their mothers – often unwittingly – march their children into a death camp. [...]
