Artists for Life

On September 21, the day of the giant pro-life rally in Toronto, Artists for Life held their first group show in the gymnasium of St. Joseph’s College School on Wellesley Street.  According to spokesman Paul Arteau, one of the exhibitors, it was an unqualified success. “We had over 200 people sign our guest book and more than 3,000 came through to view [...]

Father Abello acquitted

On October 15, in courtroom 124 in Toronto’s Old City Hall, Father Lawrence Abello won an acquittal on the charge that he had “caused a disturbance by shouting” at the back of the Harbord Street abortuary in Toronto.  (See p.1, The Interim, September 1985.)  The judge agreed with defence counsel that Father Abello was not guilty of the charge laid by Metro [...]

Peterson dodges pickets across Ontario

Ontario pro-lifers have vowed that Premier Peterson will not be allowed to forget that there is an illegal abortuary operating in the province.  Many have stated that they will picket him wherever he goes in the province. A central grievance with the Premier is that he signed a statement prior to the election stating that he would close the illegal abortuary if [...]

Justice now! Giant Rally a “success”

On the last day of summer, tens of thousands of Ontarians gathered at Queen’s Park in Toronto to voice their support for life.  The September 21 “Justice for the Unborn” rally in front the Ontario legislature was followed by a 15-block walk through downtown Toronto, which led past the Morgentaler abortion clinic on Harbord Street. I hate picketing

“I hate picketing” Join the club, so do I!  Through all the years of my conscious life, I have looked askance at picketers.  Rallies are different.  Whenever I saw a crowd of a few thousand people something or defending something, I often felt I could join them and get lost in the throng.  But 10 or 20 people walking up and down [...]

Ireland proves abortion does not prevent maternal death

Delegates at the 1983 Life Conference heard Mr. John Murphy, MD, FRCPI, MRCOG, of the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin, present a fascinating and important paper: Maternal mortality – is there ever a case for abortion?   Mr. Murphy’s hospital is the largest obstetric unit in Great Britain and Ireland, indeed, one of the largest maternity hospitals in the developed world.  [...]

To change people’s hearts

Last week, I opened a mailing from American Life Lobby.  In it was a colour photo of aborted fetuses with the caption, “Our Throw=Away Society.”   For those who are opposed to abortion, it is a gruesome sight.  But for someone like me, who had an abortion as a young girl, it is much worse than that.  I [...]

My Story

“I want to go see Oma.  I want to go see Oma…” she said over and over again – about ten times in a row – tugging at my heart strings each time she repeated it.   I was holding my young granddaughter in my arms and walking down the hallway in our house when she spotted the [...]

Morgentaler Update

Montreal Reggie Chartrand, a former boxer who now manages a Montreal restaurant, has launched a suit against Henry Morgentaler for performing an illegal abortion for the benefit of the National Film Board’s pro-abortion movie Abortion: Stories from North and South, produced by women’s Studio D. Mr. Chartrand is backed by Virginia Moore, a wealthy pro-life lady, who has made funds available to [...]

Manitoba

Manitoba keeps Morgentaler closed The Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench has ruled that the injunction forbidding Henry Morgentaler to practice medicine in the province should be continued for the time being.  The injunction, brought by the Manitoba College of Physicians and Surgeons, is to remain in effect until the College’s civil suit, seeking a permanent injunction, is heard. “The evidence is overwhelming,” [...]

Canadian Physicians for Life

The Annual General Meeting of Canadian Physicians for Life was held in Ottawa on August 20, and the guest speaker at the dinner was the Hon. James A. McGrath, M.P.  Mr. McGrath’s major theme was that if the Pro-Life movement is to move ahead, there must be a change in tactics.  This, of course, is not news.  Dr. Bernard Nathanson said the [...]

Across Canada: Ontario: Helping pregnant women

Single pregnant women often feel isolated and afraid.  Because they become vulnerable to pressure, some of these women will see abortion as their only solution.   But the North York Crisis Pregnancy Centre has opened to help women and girls of all ages and backgrounds who are confused and frightened about their pregnancy.  The centre [...]
