UPDATE – RELIGION

Alberta Report On November 7, the editor of the Edmonton Catholic weekly, the Western Catholic Reporter (WCR), was fired. He had been hired August 1. According to Mr. John Gill, lawyer and member of the WCR board, Mr. Rodney Stafford-Mayer was dismissed because the newspaper’s board of directors “were not generally satisfied with the way he was performing his job.” Reports that [...]

Rosary for Life, Canada

Rosary for Life Canada hosted its second annual world-wide Rosary for Life in London, Ontario, on October 12. The event began with Mass for the protection of the unborn in Holy Rosary Church.  Afterwards, over one hundred participants formed a procession to Victoria Hospital to pray the Rosary for the conversion of abortionists and their supporters. Other groups were praying the Rosary [...]

You were asking

How many abortions are performed worldwide each year?  L.A., Vancouver No one really knows. The most recent ‘guesstimate’ I have seen is 70 million, but the number could be much higher.  Added to these abortions are the very early abortions caused by abortifacients such as Intra-Uterine Devices (IUDs) and birth-control pills; it is suggested that these could triple the 70 million. Does [...]

TAKE ACTION: Hands across the border

In Canada we are affected by events in the pro-life arena in the U.S. as much as in any other area.  Canadian and U.S. pro-life people should support each other and work together, just as our adversaries on both sides of the border do. In Saskatchewan we have the opportunity to do that by joining the Focus on Fargo.  Merchants of Fargo [...]

R.I.P.

Teresa Ann Parsons passed away in Sherwood Park, near Edmonton, Alberta, on October 8, 1991 at the age of 60. Mrs. Parsons pioneered pro-life educational work in Alberta in the early 1970’s.  She was a founding member of Coalition for Life in 1973. Mrs. Parsons was very effective in presenting the pro-life argument in the media.  Since the mid-1970s she was Executive [...]

To serve and protect

NATIONAL BORDERS ARE NOT IMPORTANT IN GOD’S EYES.  WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT IS THAT ALL PEOPLE RESPECT THE LAW OF GOD AND IN PARTICULAR THE SANCTITY OF LIFE.  IF BABIES ARE NOT SAFE EVERYWHERE THEY ARE NOT SAFE ANYWHERE. Mike Gerrety Police Chief Mike Gerrety had only six years to go before retirement on a comfortable pension.  He might have retreated from [...]

Feminist disease diagnosed

Donna Steichen, Ungodly Rage.  The Hidden Face of Catholic Feminism.  San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1991, 420 pp, $21.50 Isn’t feminism a side issue for right-to-life supporters? In this very revealing examination of Catholic feminism, Donna Steichen shows it isn’t.  In fact, the number of entries for abortion in the index is revealing.  What Steichen shows conclusively is that Catholic feminists are radical [...]

FCP rejects hidden agenda

The Family Coalition Party of Ontario held its fourth annual convention in London, Ontario, November 1-2, 1991. Much of the convention was taken up with the further refining and formulation of principles and policies, a necessary task handled magnificently by Executive Vice-President Giuseppe Gori. Eighty delegates heard Marcy Edward at lunch on Friday speak about Seniors and the need to honour our [...]

A day in the life of a pro-life trio

Summerside, PEI – “In pro-life work, we should leave nothing to chance: we should put the spiritual first,” say Olive Moore, Eileen Lantz and Esther Steele, of East Prince (County) Right to Life, the second largest chapter in the province. And they do. The day we talked, chapter president Olive and secretary Eileen had started by attending morning Mass for the Unborn, [...]

Saskatchewan pro-life movement alive and well

I love exciting week-ends and I certainly enjoyed one recently.  It was at the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Convention, held in North Battleford from Friday October 18, to Sunday October 20. Doctor Jim McLane, president of the Battleford Pro-Life Association had invited me to give two talks.  One was during the day and I spoke on the family.  The other was as guest speaker [...]

Raising kids in the pro-life movement

Families have always been attracted to pro-life events.  For a variety of reasons, parents choose to bring their children along to abortuaries, prisons and government centers to challenge to so-called right to abortion. Perhaps it is because parents are very aware of both the joys and difficulties of bringing a new life into this world.  Perhaps it is because of their desire [...]

Another political ruling Vancouver – The BC Supreme Court has ruled that the province can no longer exclude same-sex partners from its Medicare definition of spouses.  The decision means homosexual couples will be entitled to the same medical coverage as any other couple. The Supreme Court’s ruling came in response to a court action launched by Timothy Knodel, a Vancouver male nurse.  [...]

Bishop and Cardinal praise rescuers

On day 42 of the now famous Wichita, Kansas, Operation Rescue, Wichita R.C. Bishop Eugene Gerber was one of the several speakers at a rally in support of the event. The Wichita “Rescue” lasted six weeks, led to the arrest of over 2,000 pro-lifers and was seen almost nightly on American TV. Speaking of the last 18 years Bishop Gerber said, “So [...]

Reasonableness and confrontation

This fifth editorial on the abortion mentality in Canada concerns pro-life tactics. Let us say at once that many people, including those who consider themselves opposed to abortion, are not fond of pro-lifers.  Indeed, their faces turn grim when they speak about pro-life activists, whether the political ones who confront politicians, the educational kind when they show pictures of aborted babies, or [...]

Pro-life groups urged to stop being ‘armchair generals’

Earl Amyotte, past President of Windsor (Ontario) Right to Life, urged “armchair generals” to take a more role in the fight against abortion at the ‘Life, It’s Irreplaceable’ National Pro-Life Convention, held July 4-6 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He joined a host of other leaders of the pro-life movement, who came from every province in Canada to attend the conference jointly sponsored by [...]
